Simple Homemade Playdough

I’ve been dying to try and make my own homemade playdough recipe for awhile now. There are so many different recipes out there and decided to modify one I’ve already tried to suit my needs. After discovering that my daughter is for a fact not allergic to wheat, I needed to unload a ton of gluten free flours before they went rancid.

This is seriously, by far the SOFTEST homemade playdough I’ve ever made. The rice flour really makes a difference in the texture. It is silky, smooth and cleans up well.

Simple Homemade Playdough Recipe
3 cups rice flour
1.5 cups water
1/2 cup salt
3 tsp cream of tarter
2 Tbl vegetable oil
Optional (gel food coloring)

1. Mix all the ingredients except the food coloring over low heat until just combined.

2. Separate dough into six equally sized balls and add your gel coloring. I literally dipped a toothpick into my primary colors a couple times to achieve the bright colors. A little goes a long way.

3. Knead the playdough until the color is evenly distributed. You might want to wear gloves if you don’t want any food coloring on your hands.

4. Place in your desired containers. I got mine in the dollar section of Target and it works great. I doubled the recipe so I could give a set away to a friend.

Vanessa didn’t quite understand the point of playdough and thought it was food. We had a little play date with a really good friend of mine and her daughter LOVED playing with the stuff. I might revisit the idea of playdough when Vanessa turns two….Looks salty munchkin.

Thankfully, this is completely non-toxic and safe playdough. No worries about a little bit of it going down the hatch. Bonus points for you parents of children with gluten allergies. Gluten free homemade playdough! I double checked to make sure that the food coloring was gluten free (not that we need to, but for those of you who do). The Wilton brand gel colors are gluten free.

I personally think making my own homemade playdough recipe is something my daughter might appreciate when she’s older, especially since you can create your own colors and you can control what goes in it. Have any of you tried making your own playdough? Love it or LOVE IT?

Hi Kristen! So sorry I didn't see this sooner. It didn't stain her hands at all, but it will stain your hands if you don't wear gloves while you work in the food coloring.

I love making Playdough! I usually make it several times a year with my Kindergarten Class. I will definitely have to try this one out! LOVE the bright colors!
